Duromer Products are looking forward to exhibiting at National Manufacturing Week/Ausplas which is held at Sydney Showground, Sydney Olympic Park Homebush.

One of the highlights for Duromer is the announcement of their investment into Long Fibre Technology and becoming the first and only Australian manufacturer of long fibre polymers for injection moulding.

Apart from material manufacture and supply, Duromer will be sharing their broader capabilities that support their materials sales. One key benefit that Duromer provides is there support of application development and helping clients solve problems.

This includes;

Welcome to end of first quarter 2014 and the challenges that lie ahead for not only our industry but any that is affected by the harsh reality of a falling AUD and the actual cost of doing business down under. While some agree the dropping dollar will help manufacturers the actual input costs increase as the AUD declines with imported raw materials rising in value an example. As the pressures force manufacturing facilities to close such as Electrolux, Holden and Ford then the next problem we face is attracting staff with the right skill sets. PIMA is such an industry body invited by Government and Industry to provide real feedback on issues facing our industry in the areas of skills, training and other concerns affecting the industry.

For these reasons PIMA will be actively representing the member’s interests on Government and industry panels and think tanks. This year AUSPLAS is to be held in Sydney (Homebush) 13 – 16th May so look out for the PIMA stand and presentations. Membership drive, we will welcome any new members or past members re-joining the cause. The new website is starting to take shape and are very hopeful to be up and running before May this year. This newsletter is the first to include interview with a well-known identity from within our industry. We are currently looking to improve and update the current website to enable all members to receive up to date information in a timely manner.

I am writing this wondering what direction manufacturing will take over the next few years with the closure of the car assembly plants and the knock on effect that will have. We also have a government that wants to lead the world in free trade agreements to the potential detriment of our manufacturing industries. On top of this we are looking at a horror budget to be handed down. What do we do?

To help the industry, Governments and Manufacturing Skills Australia (MSA) to understand where the education, skill levels and needs are for our industry, PIMA has commissioned a survey on language, literacy, numeracy and technical capabilities of shop floor staff at polymer converters in New South Wales. The final report is ready for release and will be the most arcuate and up to date report of its type. In developing this report we have interviewed 18 companies employing a total of 849 people.
